To renew a permit, the holder must fill out the “License/ID/Permit Application” or the LI-1 Form. This form can be found on our website, www.dmv.ri.gov, under the “Forms” tab and “License Forms.” The fee for someone under 18 to renew their permit is $12.50; the fee for someone 18 and older is $7.50. A permit can be renewed in person by making a reservation at any of our branches — or AAA if they are a member — by making a reservation.

Instructions on how to make a reservation can be found on the front page of our website. Be sure to follow all the directions to the very end to receive a text or email reservation confirmation. Show this reservation to the security at the door of our branches, and you will be allowed into the branch to complete the transaction.

This transaction can be done by mail or by dropping off the paperwork. Complete the LI-1 form and provide a signed check made out to the DMV or a telephone number where we can call and get credit card information. We will process the transaction and send back the renewed permit and a receipt.

If the application is going to be mailed in with payment, please send it to the Cranston DMV, 600 New London Ave., Cranston, RI 02920.

If you are going to drop off the paperwork and payment, please use the Drop Box located in the foyer of our branches. Drop Box hours are the same as the branch hours. Branch locations and hours can also be found on our website.

An active permit is required to take the road exam. Our website can be referred to for information or to help answer questions.
